The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children visit the orthodontist around the age of seven. By treating children young, your orthodontist will be able to correct and guide your child’s jaw to create space for crowded teeth, possibly avoid extractions in the future and fix common problems such as thumb sucking and speech issues. As a parent you can watch for signs that it is time to make an appointment with an orthodontist such as crowding of the teeth, thumb sucking, breathing through the mouth, or jaws that pop. Your child’s dentist can also help you recognize when it is time to see an orthodontist.

Phase 1 Treatment

Phase One treatment is considered early treatment. It is started when a child is between seven and ten years old. It lasts about twelve to twenty-one months. It is our goal to help address significant problems to prevent them from becoming worse and causing bad self-esteem later during the teenage years.

Phase 2 Treatment

After a rest period, while the rest of the permanent teeth come in, we start phase two, which involves using braces or some other appliance to line up the teeth correctly. This phase can take up to two years to move the teeth where they need to be. Afterward, it is recommended that children wear a retainer to keep their teeth in place.

If you have any questions about two-phase orthodontic treatment, don’t hesitate to contact us today at (970) 867-9464 (Fort Morgan) or (720) 805-0501 (Brighton).
